Chinese Zodiac Calculator

Enter your birth date to find your Chinese zodiac animal, element, and Yin or Yang sign. The result is your birth-year zodiac layer, calculated against the Chinese New Year that begins your zodiac year.

Find your Chinese zodiac sign

Your birth date is enough. This calculator uses Chinese New Year as the zodiac-year boundary, so January and early February birthdays are handled by date rather than by the Gregorian year alone.

Birth date

Enter the date in Month, Day, Year order - for example, February 6, 1990. No birth time, place, or timezone is required.

Your zodiac animal is only one part of the picture

Your Chinese zodiac animal comes from your birth year, but BaZi looks at much more than that.

BaZi is a traditional Chinese birth-chart system — similar in purpose to Western astrology, but built on a different framework. It uses your year, month, day, and hour of birth to create a Four Pillars chart and explore your Five Elements, Day Master, relationship patterns, career tendencies, and life cycles.

Your Chinese Zodiac Sign Comes From Your Birth Year

Your Chinese zodiac sign is based on your birth year - but the year does not always begin on January 1. The twelve animals run in a fixed order, one per year, and every year is also labelled with one of the five elements and a Yin or Yang polarity. Together those labels give a name such as Fire Goat, Wood Dragon, or Metal Pig.

Why January and February Birthdays Need Special Handling

A zodiac year starts at Chinese New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 21. That means the first weeks of a Gregorian year still belong to the previous zodiac year.

Take 2027 as an example. Chinese New Year falls on February 6, 2027, so someone born in January 2027 is not a Goat: their zodiac year is 2026, and their sign is the one that began in 2026. Someone born on March 20, 2027 is a Goat. The birth date decides the sign, not the year number printed on the calendar.

This calculator compares your birth date directly against the verified Chinese New Year date for that year, so a date in the days around the boundary resolves to the correct animal rather than to the Gregorian year.

What Is My Chinese Zodiac Element?

Each zodiac year also carries one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The element comes from the year's Heavenly Stem and alternates in a ten-year cycle, so each element covers two consecutive years - one Yang and one Yin - before the next element begins.

The animal and the element combine into a single label such as Fire Goat or Wood Dragon. Because the animals repeat every twelve years but the element pairing takes sixty years, the exact combination is rarer than the animal on its own.

WoodJia (Yang), Yi (Yin)2024: Yang Wood Dragon
FireBing (Yang), Ding (Yin)2026: Yang Fire Horse

WaterRen (Yang), Gui (Yin)2032: Yang Water Rat

What Does Yin or Yang Mean in the Chinese Zodiac?

Yin and Yang describe two complementary qualities rather than good and bad. In the zodiac cycle the polarity alternates every year: a Yang year is followed by a Yin year, and then the next element begins. Because the polarity belongs to the year rather than to the person, it is best read as part of the year's label - Yin Fire Goat instead of simply Fire Goat - rather than as a statement about character.

Chinese Zodiac vs. a Full Chinese Birth Chart

The zodiac animal is mainly the birth-year layer. A BaZi (Four Pillars) chart adds the month, day, and hour pillars, and reads relationships between them - including the Day Master, the stem of the day pillar, which many readers treat as the centre of the chart. Two people born under the same animal can therefore have quite different charts.

There is also a boundary difference worth knowing. This calculator uses Chinese New Year, the convention behind the everyday zodiac sign. A BaZi Year Pillar may instead switch at Li Chun, a solar term that falls a few days before Chinese New Year in most years. For a birth date inside that short window, the zodiac animal here and the BaZi Year Pillar can legitimately differ. They answer different questions, so this page never presents the zodiac animal as identical to a Year Pillar.

You can see a full chart, built from year, month, day, and hour, on the BaZi calculator page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my Chinese zodiac sign?

It is the animal of the zodiac year your birth date falls in. Enter your birth date above: the calculator compares it against Chinese New Year for that year and returns the animal, the element, and the Yin or Yang polarity.

Does the Chinese zodiac year start on January 1?

No. The zodiac year begins at Chinese New Year, which falls between January 21 and February 21. Anyone born in January or early February belongs to the previous zodiac year.

Why can two people born in the same Gregorian year have different zodiac signs?

Because the zodiac year starts weeks after January 1. Someone born in January is still in the previous zodiac year, while someone born later in the same Gregorian year is in the new one - for 2027 that boundary is February 6.

What is my Chinese zodiac element?

The element comes from the Heavenly Stem of your zodiac year. There are two stems per element - for example Bing and Ding are Fire - so a Fire year can be Yang Fire or Yin Fire. The result above shows both.

Is Chinese zodiac the same as BaZi?

No. The zodiac animal is a single birth-year sign. A BaZi (Four Pillars) chart also uses the month, day, and hour of birth. The two can even disagree on the year boundary: this calculator uses Chinese New Year, while a BaZi Year Pillar may use the solar term Li Chun.

Do I need my birth time for this calculator?

No. A birth date is enough, because the birth-year zodiac layer only depends on the date. Birth time and birthplace matter for a full Four Pillars chart, not for the animal or element shown here.
